Wesley Chapel

Wesley Chapel is an unincorporated census-designated place in Pasco County, Florida, United States. It is part of the Tampa Bay Area metro. The population was 44,092 at the 2010 census. In 2003, some residents of Wesley Chapel started a movement to incorporate the community. At the recording of this video and the writing of this blog post, it is unsuccessful. Wesley Chapel is home to lots of newer construction homes, the first man-made lagoon in the Tampa Bay area, and lots of great local business and places to discover. Wesley Chapel is one of the best Tampa suburbs due to its current growth while its still an easy drive into Tampa. Median Household income: $ 84,951 & Median housing value: $ 231,600

Brandon

Brandon’s history began on January 20, 1857, when John Brandon arrived at Fort Brooke, which is now now Tampa, with his first wife Martha and their six sons. He purchased a total of 200 acres and named it Brandon. In 1959, the Brandon Chamber of Commerce was formed to help promote business and growth. By the early 1960s, Brandon’s population was 8,000, and it was estimated that one new family moved into town every day. Brandon took off rapidly during the 1980s. Development of the southern area of Brandon brought thousands of new residents. On September 27, 1986, Interstate 75 began to bring traffic through the Brandon area, dramatically changing the community and helping its population reach nearly 58,000 by 1990. At this time Brandon’s population is closer to 115,000 people. Brandon is one of the best Tampa suburbs due to its ease of access to the city. Median household income:  $61,120  & Median housing value: $ 187,000

Riverview

Riverview was founded in 1885 on the Alafia river’s north shore. The settlement on the southside of the river was called Peru. It wasn’t until the 1940’s that Riverview absorbed Peru and now encompasses all the almost 50 square miles of land attributed to Riverview. Riverview has been a quick growing town since the early 2000’s, and is quickly approaching a population of 100,000. This makes Riverview one of the best Tampa suburbs.  Median Household income:   $ 74,622  & Median housing value: $ 214,100

Plant City

Plant city is a unique one in the area, as it is an incorporated town, which basically means it has its own government and utilities.   Plant City has a rich history dating back to the mid-1800s when settlers first began to populate Florida. Plant City was incorporated in 1885, 16 years after the state was chartered. Plant City derives its name not from the surrounding agricultural industry which greatly added to the city’s growth, but from Henry Bradley Plant. Plant City is the winter strawberry capital of the world, and hosts a huge festival every year celebrating the crop, aptly named the Plant City Strawberry festival. Plant City is one of the best Tampa Suburbs due to its small town feeling, but with so much to do and explore. Median household income:  $ 54,235  & Median housing value: $ 169,400

Apollo Beach

Apollo Beach is a smaller town on the coast just at the mouth of the bay. Much of the area is on the canals built by the founder in the 1930s. This is when the owner, Paul Dickman conceived the idea of a waterfront community. He felt the location was ideally located equidistant between Tampa and Bradenton along U.S. Route 41. Today Apollo Beach is a thriving waterfront community with year-round boating, fishing, and other water activities. The estimated 55 miles (89 km) of canals lead to Tampa Bay.  Apollo Beach is home to just one “beach,” which is in county preserve area accurately named Apollo Beach Nature Preserve. There is no swimming there though, unfortunately. TECO has a large power plant in the area, which pours out warm water (from cooling its machinery) into a small outlet where manatees like to hang out in the cooler months. TECO then has created the seasonally open “Manatee Viewing Center” with tons of educational info about the area’s flora and fauna and of course the manatees.  Apollo Beach is one of the best Tampa suburbs due to its ease of highway access, plus its small-town feeling. Median Household income: $ 88,919   & Median housing value: $ 276,600

Ruskin

Ruskin was founded on the banks of the Manatee River in 1908. Ruskin was named after the English writer and social reformist, John Ruskin. By 1925, Ruskin’s population remained at 200, though it had six hotels, two sawmills, one turpentine still, a public library, the Ruskin Telephone Company, four groceries, one garage, a well driller, two restaurants, a dry goods dealer, a carpenter, and a number of fruit and truck growers. Some of the fields had been cultivated, and tomatoes, cabbages, onions and other crops were being raised. There was a nursery established for ornamentals. With the road developments auto service was provided to BrandonTampa, and Wimauma. Ruskin is the seat of the South Hillsborough County Government Center and has a branch of the Hillsborough County Public Library System. It had a very active chamber of commerce until 2011 when it merged with the Apollo Beach Chamber to become the South Shore Chamber of Commerce and moved from Ruskin to Apollo Beach. Ruskin is one of the best Tampa suburbs due to the space still not developed there. Median household income: $ 57,836 &  Median housing value: $ 183,700
